William De Morgan: Galleons

De Morgan produced eighteen standard galleon designs. They were inspired by the Medieval and Tudor ships shown in manuscript illustrations such as those carrying the hero`s of Morte d`Arthur or the warring kings of Froissant. They are distinctive for their fanciful interpretation and the use of stylised waves often with friendly fish and sea monsters. The ships are usually at full sale with exaggerated flowing pennons. These designs are outlined onto an engobe and decorated using individual brush strokes before being bathed in an alkali overglaze.
